Pinstriping – at its roots – is as old as mankind and cave drawings. For hot rodders, those roots stem directly from the decoration of Roman chariots, through the transition of horse-drawn carriages to the steel bodies of the earliest locomotives, automobiles, and fire trucks. Even Henry Ford, who mandated every Model-T be painted black to save a few bucks on materials, spent the time to detail his mass-produced Tin Lizzies with hand pinstriping. While there were no shortage of creative minds and hands in this era, it was the explosion of Kenny “Von Dutch” Howard’s technique that paved the road for what we know today after he was challenged to hide some scratches on the poorly paint-prepped nose of a customer’s car.
Christopher Titus may be known as an American Comedian but he’s all about American Hot Rods! When I was asked if I would tackle the wood-graining work on his 1965 Chevelle 2 door wagon, my answer - HELL YA!
We see them almost every day without a second thought. Weathered by time, distinct characteristics shining through, hand-painted signs are a product of a fascinating 150-year-old American history.
Holy Shit it’s true – Naugles is back and serving up some killer eats! Who would have thought after Del Taco bought out it’s competitor Naugles in 1995 and CLOSED THE DOORS for ever, it would be back again.
Let’s talk Dune Buddy history; Meyers designed and built a dune buggy that was more shapely than most of them and he took it out and showed it off and found he had a lot of interested people. Drawing on his experience in sailboat construction, Meyers modeled and built his first dune buggy, "Old Red", a shortened VW Beetle with a monocoque, fiberglass shell and an IRS trailing arm suspension, in late 1963 to May 1964 in his garage in Newport Beach, California.
