Pinstriping – at its roots – is as old as mankind and cave drawings. For hot rodders, those roots stem directly from the decoration of Roman chariots, through the transition of horse-drawn carriages to the steel bodies of the earliest locomotives, automobiles, and fire trucks. Even Henry Ford, who mandated every Model-T be painted black to save a few bucks on materials, spent the time to detail his mass-produced Tin Lizzies with hand pinstriping. While there were no shortage of creative minds and hands in this era, it was the explosion of Kenny “Von Dutch” Howard’s technique that paved the road for what we know today after he was challenged to hide some scratches on the poorly paint-prepped nose of a customer’s car.
